How the work goes

1. Cover and protect properly

   Floors sheeted, furniture moved to the center and covered, fixtures and hardware removed, not painted around. Taping takes time up front and saves far more of it later.

2. Fill, sand, caulk, prime

   Nail holes and dents filled and sanded flat. Gaps at trim and baseboard caulked, because that line is what the eye reads as neat. Bare filler and any patch gets primed. Paint over raw compound flashes as a dull patch through the topcoat.

3. Cut in by hand

   Wall-to-ceiling lines, trim edges and corners get cut in with a brush. It is slower than tape and it is straighter, and it is the detail people actually notice when they walk into a finished room.

4. Two coats, and the right sheen for the room

   Two coats is the default, not an upsell. One coat over a color change almost never covers evenly. Flat or matte hides wall imperfections and does not scrub well; eggshell and satin take cleaning, which is why they belong in hallways, kitchens and bathrooms.

What drives the price

Nobody can price a repaint from a room count, because the prep is most of the labor and prep is invisible in a photo. Here is what actually drives it.

Two rooms of identical size can differ substantially in price on prep alone. A walk-through is the only honest way to quote a repaint, which is why nobody should give you a firm interior painting price over the phone without seeing it.
