Lyerly is what Melville and Glenwood turned into. Both were older and both were somewhere else. When the Chattanooga, Rome and Columbus Railway came through in 1888, Angus McLeod gave the land for the depot, the town lots were laid out on his farm three quarters of a mile north of where Melville had stood, and Melville followed them up the road. Nobody built these houses in a batch. Lots went one at a time to whoever bought them, and each house went up when its owner was ready, so a single street here can run a farmhouse, a bungalow and something put up after the war across three consecutive lots. Whatever is behind the wall next door tells you nothing at all about what is behind yours.

- The depot plat, Railroad Avenue and the state avenues
- The core of town is the grid McLeod's farm was cut into: Railroad Avenue along the tracks, then Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Chattooga Avenue, with McLeod Street still carrying his name. Because the lots sold individually and built individually, this is the opposite of a mill village. No run of matching sashes, no standard porch, no shared plan. Every siding profile, every window and every length of trim on a house here was chosen for that house. Matching work gets done off your own building rather than off a neighbor's, and a price written from photographs is worth a good deal less here than a walk around the outside of the house.

- The plant at the edge of town has been through several owners and finished its manufacturing run as a tufting operation in 2019, and the road name records the housing that once went with it. That pocket is the exception to how the rest of Lyerly was assembled. Where houses went up as a run instead of one at a time, they wear out as a run as well. The porch that has gone soft on one is the porch about to go on the next three, the same window is rotting at the same corner up the street, and a piece cut to fit one of them will fit its neighbors. That is worth establishing before anything is ordered or cut.
- The river side and Lyerly Dam Road
- The Chattooga runs along the southeastern edge of town and there has been a dam on it since 1919. It first made power in 1920 and a flood tore into it a month later, which is a fair summary of the river's habits. Property on that low ground gets the slow version of the problem rather than the dramatic one: humidity that never leaves a crawlspace, and framing that never dries past the point where rot stops. The first sign is rarely a stain. It is floor nails standing proud of the boards in a room nobody thought was damp, or a threshold that has dropped a quarter inch below its own door.
