The old town on the high ground

Where Alabama 68 and Alabama 9 cross, above the bluff the town is named for. This was a trading town with a sawmill and a flour mill by 1838 and a tannery, a foundry and a machine shop after that, and the buildings on this ground have usually been two or three things already. Pathkiller Cove, Newberry Cove and the rest of the water side, which is most of the town's housing. The water face of a house takes weather the road face never sees, and it is where the failures start: deck ledgers and post bases sitting wet, railings and stair stringers on the walk down to the bank, screen porch framing, and doors on the lake side that swell through a humid summer and rattle in January. Toward Cornwall Furnace and the Chattooga arm

North of town the ground runs down to where the Chattooga comes into the lake, past Cornwall Furnace, which the Noble Brothers of Rome built in the middle of the Civil War out of hematite blocks hauled in by ox cart, with a half-mile race cut from the river through a tunnel to drive the blast. It is the only National Register listing in the county. The houses out this way sit on lower, damper river ground than the town does, and it shows up first in crawlspaces, then in sills and joist ends along exterior walls.

Alabama 9 east toward Farill and the state line

The Rome road, and the reason Cedar Bluff is the closest part of this county to town. Out here the pattern loosens into acreage: older frame farmhouses, brick ranches from the seventies and eighties, and manufactured homes with site-built additions on them. Long driveways, no sidewalks, outbuildings that have been repurposed twice. Work on this stretch is almost always a list rather than a single item, which is exactly the shape that suits a place half an hour out.
