Shannon was a depot on the Southern line shipping cut wood before it was anything else. Then in 1925 a New Jersey company called Brighton Mills picked the spot for its southern plant and wrote a hundred and twenty-five cottages into the building contract. They went up around the mill on a grid of numbered streets and lettered avenues, all at once and all small. Three rooms and a bath was a house here. Brighton sold them to the families renting them in the early 1950s, and seventy years of those families needing a fourth room, a second bathroom and somewhere to park is most of what sits on these houses now. The original cottage is still in there. Finding where it stops is the first thing that happens on a job.

The numbered streets and lettered avenues
First through Fourth Street, crossed by Avenues B, C, D, E and F. A company laid that out on paper before a single family moved in, and it is still the shape of the place. These are the 1925 cottages: small, frame, on crawlspace rather than slab, because nobody poured a slab under a house in 1925. Hipped roofs on the square ones, shotgun plans on the narrow ones. A hipped roof on a small footprint means four hip lines and almost no eave, so rain lands at the base of the wall instead of clear of it, and the corner boards, the fascia and the bottom course of siding go first. Inside, a shotgun plan has no hallway, so every room is a passage and the floor wears in a line straight through the house.
The mill site off First Street Northeast
The plant ran under four names, Brighton, Burlington, Klopman and Galey and Lord, and closed in 2004. Most of it came down in 2011, and a great deal of the material was reclaimed and sold around Shannon rather than hauled away. The streets serving the site still carry two of those names, Brighton Trail and Burlington Road. It matters on site because mill wood and mill brick turn up in sheds, shop buildings, decks and floors all over the village, and none of it is dimensional stock. Heavy old wood does not take a modern hanger or a modern screw the way new lumber does, and a salvaged board is never the thickness of anything at the yard. It gets cut to the piece that is already there.
Hermitage, Old Shannon Road and the Calhoun side
Shannon was Ridge Valley and then Hermitage before the depot renamed it, and the older roads kept the name: Hermitage Road, West Hermitage Road, Old Shannon Road. Most of Shannon is out here rather than in the grid, strung along those roads and along the Calhoun highway on side streets like Meadowvale, Woodvale and Skyline. The lots are bigger, the houses sit well apart, and nothing repeats, so a porch rail, a step stringer or a run of siding gets measured on the day rather than matched to a neighbor. Ward Creek runs through this side of Shannon, and the bottom land along it holds water long after the village ground has given it up. That is usually where a soft joist end near an outside wall begins.
The buildings that were never houses
Brighton put up more than cottages. The company ran a commissary, a ball park, a swimming pool, a pool hall and a clubhouse for the people at the plant, and Klopman sold most of the property near the mill into private hands in the mid-1980s. Some of those buildings are still standing and doing something else now. It is worth saying out loud before anyone prices work on one, because a building framed as a store or a hall has spans, headers and openings sized for a store or a hall. The wall you would take out of a bedroom is not the same wall here, and what looks like a partition often is not one.
