Sand Rock is on top of Lookout Mountain, five miles up Alabama 68 from Leesburg, and it got its name the way you would hope. A settler in the eighteen thirties picked up a piece of the rock lying everywhere around him, crumbled it between his fingers, and said what it was. That is the same Pennsylvanian sandstone standing in house-sized blocks at Cherokee Rock Village on the brow above the lake, and it is under everything up here, close to the surface, with thin gravelly soil over the top. Sand Rock was a farming community for most of its history and did not become a town until 1988, and most of the houses standing now went up in the nineties and two thousands. There is a school and there are churches. There is no post office, no supermarket and no hardware store, and that last one is a practical fact about getting anything fixed on this mountain.

- The school is the center of the community and always has been, from a one-room log cabin on the Stowe farm, to a two-room building moved to more central ground around 1895, to the multi-building complex there now. The housing nearest it is the closest thing Sand Rock has to a neighborhood, and it is mostly nineties and two-thousands building: vinyl and hardboard siding, builder-grade exterior doors, and decks that are all reaching thirty at the same time. Thirty is when the ledger, the post bases and the stair stringers start to matter a great deal more than the boards.

- The edge of the plateau, where the ground drops away and the view opens over Weiss. Houses on the brow are exposed on the open side in a way valley houses simply are not, and the weather comes at them rather than past them. Everything on that face wears faster: railings, deck boards, screen porch framing, exterior door weatherstripping and the caulk joints on the windward elevation. It is the one part of this county where the sunny, windy side of a house gives out before the shaded side does.

- The north end of town runs over the county line, and out along the farm roads the older fabric is still standing: frame farmhouses on acreage, outbuildings that have been three things, and later houses built on family land beside them. Two things follow from the ground. Rock is close enough to the surface that anything set into it is sitting on or near stone, and water does not soak into a sandstone plateau, it runs across it. Grading, gutters and downspout extensions do more work up here than they get credit for, and when they are wrong it is the crawlspace vents and the band joist that pay for it.
