How the repair is done

1. Find out why it happened first

   A crack in the same corner every year is movement, and filling it again will not stop it returning. Staining means water, and water needs a source found before anything is closed up. Soft, crumbling board is not a patching job. It comes out and gets replaced.

2. The repair method matches the damage

   Small holes take a mesh or setting-compound patch. Anything larger gets backed properly and a new piece of board cut in, not layer upon layer of filler bridging a void. Popped tape is cut out and re-taped, not skimmed over, because skimming a lifted seam just delays it.

3. Feathered wide, sanded properly

   Compound goes on in coats, each one wider than the last, so the repair blends into the flat instead of sitting proud of it. Sanding is done with a light held sideways across the wall, which is the only reliable way to see what is still showing.

4. Texture and primer before you judge it

   If your walls or ceilings have a texture, the patch gets that texture matched before priming. Bare compound absorbs paint differently to the wall around it, so a patch always gets primed. Otherwise it flashes through the topcoat as a dull shape.
