Where the valley ends and the Piedmont begins

The fault system that forms the eastern edge of the Great Valley runs west to about the Polk and Haralson county line, and south of it the rock is crystalline: Ashland schist, and the Wedowee formation that comes up from the Alabama line and wedges out about nine miles northeast of Buchanan. Under a house that is a different animal from limestone. Piedmont ground is deep red clay over rotten rock, it drains slowly, and it moves with the season rather than with a water table. The ordinary symptoms here are seasonal ones: a door that swings free in January and drags in July, and a drywall crack that reopens at the same door head every year no matter how carefully it was filled the last time. Filling it again is not the answer on its own.

Two land lotteries, and the lots they left behind

The old Cherokee line crosses Haralson County, and it split the county's paperwork in two. The land south of it came out of the Creek cession and was surveyed into lots of 202.5 acres for the 1827 lottery. Roughly a quarter of the county, the part north of the line, came out of the Cherokee cession and was cut into forty acre gold lots for the 1832 draw. That is not just history. Starting lot size is how a county ends up with two rural patterns instead of one, and lot size is what decides whether a house is a house on a street or a house on acreage. Acreage changes the work more than the house does: outbuildings that matter as much as the house, gates and fence line, a longer drive, and exterior wood with nothing sheltering it.

The railroads crossed at Bremen, and the courthouse stayed at Buchanan

Two lines went through in the 1880s. The Georgia Pacific was built east to west in about 1882 to 1884, and the Chattanooga, Rome and Columbus came through north to south in about 1887. They crossed at Bremen, which is why Bremen got the factories while Buchanan kept the courthouse. Bremen made men's suits, shirts and pants from the late twenties onward and was known as the Clothing Center of the South from the forties into the nineties. A sewing plant builds a town differently from a cotton mill. There is no company village of forty matching houses in this county. What there is instead is a great deal of modest housing put up in ones and twos while the plants were hiring, from the thirties through the seventies, and the whole of it is now old enough that the outside wants attention at the same time.

Tallapoosa boomed for six years, and the houses show it

Outside investors promoted Tallapoosa hard from about 1887 to 1893: a platted city, a hotel at the springs, and by 1891 a claim of nearly seven hundred houses with two thirds of them built in the previous two years. Then the money went home. What followed was the vineyards, Hungarian families at Budapest and Slovak families at Nitra, and the state prohibition act of 1907 finished that too. A town built in a two year rush and then left alone has a very particular repair profile. A large block of houses share an age, a set of details and a set of failure points, all of them now well past a century, with long gaps and very little in between. Knowing what is behind one wall over there tells you a good deal about the next one.

Why a Rome base works here

Haralson County is the far end of one road. US 27 runs south out of Rome, through Cedartown, and into Buchanan, and it still carries the Martha Berry name when it gets there. That is worth something on a punch list. It is a longer run than Floyd or Polk, so the visit gets loaded at the front: the walk-through happens first, the truck leaves with the whole list on it, and six small jobs get done in one morning instead of turning into three appointments. Buchanan and the rest of the county are scheduled like anywhere else.
