What the rating actually tells you

A rating on its own is hard to read. Every contractor has one and most of them look good, so the number that matters is how many people bothered to leave it.

That is a lot for an owner-operated repair business. Most small jobs never get reviewed at all, because nobody writes up a patched wall or a door that finally latches. These customers did anyway.

Where to read them

All 40 are on Google, attached to real accounts, under real names, in the order Google put them, including any that are less than perfect. You can read every one in about four minutes and judge for yourself.

What to check besides the reviews

Reviews tell you whether people were happy. They don't tell you whether a contractor is covered if something goes wrong. These are worth asking any repair business:

• A certificate of insurance, not a verbal confirmation. Any established contractor can produce one, and we will send ours if you ask.
• A license number for any part of the job that sits in a licensed trade, because some are licensed regardless of job size.
• Whether the quote is hourly or flat-rate, and what happens if the job turns out bigger than it looked.
• Whether there is any guarantee if a repair doesn't hold.
