Gutters and what they cost

What gutter cleaning costs around Rome, and why the low end has a floor

Gutter cleaning cost usually runs $120 to $200+ for a typical house around Rome. Our $180 minimum job charge puts a floor under the bottom of that range, so the low end isn't a visit you can book here on its own. Above it, the quote follows how full the gutters are and how hard they are to reach.

What gutter cleaning usually runs around here

Expect $120 to $200+ for a typical house. That's what the work usually runs in this part of Georgia. Most jobs land inside it, and big or badly neglected ones go past the top.

It isn't a quote for your house or anyone's price list. Use it to check a number you've already been handed: inside the range the quote is ordinary, and outside it something specific should explain the gap.

Why can't you book the bottom of the range?

Every visit carries the same fixed costs before a single gutter is touched: the drive out, the ladder, the drive back. A minimum job charge covers the trip and the first stretch of work, so it puts a floor under the price, and on gutters that floor sits above the bottom of the range.

With our $180 minimum job charge, a gutter visit here on its own starts at the minimum, so the bottom of the range isn't available however clear the gutters are. Other companies set floors of their own, and a quote that comes in under the range is worth a question about what it leaves out.

That's why gutters are the job to pair with something else. They share a ladder with soffit, trim and siding repairs, and the guide to batching small jobs shows how the cost of the trip spreads once the list has more than one item on it.

What moves a gutter quote up from the floor

Most of it comes from the house, and some from the state the gutters are in:

  • Length of gutter and number of downspouts. A long run with several downspouts takes longer than a short one with two, and the footprint of the house sets both.
  • What's in them. Loose leaves scoop out easily. Years of leaves, roof grit and seedlings pack into a sludge that takes far longer, and time since the last cleaning is most of the difference.
  • Where the ladder has to stand. Sloping ground, shrubs against the wall and a steep driveway all slow the setup, because a ladder on poor ground has to be set with care.
  • Guards. Any that have to be lifted off before the cleaning and fitted back after it add work.
  • What the cleaning turns up. A section that has pulled loose or a joint that drips only shows once the debris is out.

What a cleaning price leaves out: repairs, resealing and guards

A cleaning price covers the cleaning. Re-securing a sagging run, resealing a leaking joint and replacing hangers are repairs, and guards are a product of their own. Each gets priced separately, and a quote that folds any of them into the cleaning line should say so.

Repairs show up after the gutters are clear, because debris hides what's under it. A fair quote handles that by showing you the problem and agreeing the price before the work starts, so nothing arrives for the first time on the final bill.

Guards have limits of their own. They reduce how often gutters need clearing but don't end it, since fine debris still builds up beneath them. A gutter that still runs over once it's clean has a different fault, usually the downspout or the pitch, and why gutters overflow even when they look clear sorts out which.

Anything on the roof surface, shingles and flashing included, sits outside gutter work altogether. That's a roofer's job, and how to tell which trade a job belongs to is worth a read before anyone is called.

Doing it yourself, and where the ladder decides

If you can reach the gutters from a ladder on level ground, plenty of owners do this one themselves. The kit is gloves, a scoop, a bucket and a hose, and what you save is the whole visit, including our $180 minimum job charge.

What you take on is the ladder. Set it on firm, level ground, keep your belt buckle between the rails, and climb down to move it each time instead of leaning for the next stretch. Where the ground slopes, where a drop or a hard surface sits below, or where you'd have to reach sideways, hire it out.

Run water through when you finish. If it backs up at a downspout, the clog sits below where you cleared.

What to do with the quote in your hand

Put it against the range first, then against the floor.

Under the range, ask what's missing. The usual answers are downspouts that were never checked, debris left on the ground for you to deal with, and no water run through at the end.

Inside it, the number is ordinary, and what matters is whether the quote names what's included. A line that says only "gutters cleaned" is hard to hold anyone to.

Above it, ask what changed. Guards to lift and refit, years of packed debris and repairs found once the gutters were clear are all real reasons. A higher number with no reason attached isn't one, and quotes here are free, so a second opinion costs you nothing.

If you'd like a number for your own house, gutter cleaning and repair is where to start.

Questions that come with this one

Does the price change if the gutters haven't been cleaned in years?

Usually, and it's the most common reason a quote runs above the range. Years of compacted debris take longer to clear than one season's worth, and the pile often hides repairs. Ask that anything the cleaning uncovers is shown to you and priced before it's done.

Why does a small gutter job cost as much as a bigger one?

Because the drive, the ladder and the setup cost the same on a small house as on a big one, and a minimum job charge covers them. Pairing the gutters with other ladder work on the same visit is how you get more for that money.

Do gutter guards change what a cleaning costs?

They can. Guards that come off before the clean and go back on afterward add work, and the guards themselves are a separate product with a separate price.
